Ausgang foi formada em 1983, das cinzas do Kabuki, que, por sua vez, surgiu da primeira banda de Mark, Solicitors.Como Kabuki, lançaram o single I Am a Horse (1982) com Max (vocais), Cub (baixo) Matthew (guitarra) e Ibo (bateria).
Com uma sonoridade intensa e caótica, fortemente influenciada por The Stooges e The Birthday Party, a banda se viu parte de um cenário que incluía nomes como Sex Gang Children, Alien Sex Fiend, Skeletal Family, Specimen e Inca Babies.
No final de 1983 assinaram com o selo Criminal Damage Records. O primeiro EP, The Teachings of Web, foi lançado em 1984, seguido pelo single "Solid Glass Spine" e pelo EP Head On!, produzido por Andi Sex Gang. Com uma identidade sonora crua e energética, o grupo rapidamente se consolidou na crescente cena gótica britânica.
O ano de 1985 trouxe mudanças na formação: Ian assumiu a bateria, e logo depois, Stu substituiu Cub no baixo. Com essa nova configuração, o Ausgang acompanhou Gene Loves Jezebel em turnê e decidiu criar seu próprio selo, Shakedown, pelo qual lançaram o single "King Hell" em 1986. No ano seguinte, inspirados por um amigo que pintou a frase Ausgang-a-Go-Go em sua jaqueta, a banda adotou o nome e lançou o mini-LP Los Descamisados.
Ausgang se separou em 1987, com todos seguindo seus caminhos separados. Mark formou algumas novas bandas - mais notavelmente Lean Steel, que gravou algumas demos e fez turnê com The Wonderstuff, mas também se desfez.
Foi somente em 2003 que Ausgang se reformou após o lançamento de "Last Exit", uma coletânea do melhor do Ausgang, pela Cherry Red Records.
A banda fez turnê mundial por alguns anos, fez uma pausa, reformou-se novamente e parou de tocar quando o baixista Stu adoeceu.
Em 2022, a banda se reformou novamente, desta vez com um novo baterista, Victor, e uma nova baixista, Sarah, e começou a fazer turnê novamente.
A Batcave Productions na Polônia lançou um álbum em vinil (e depois em CD) de demos antigas do Kabuki e Ausgang chamado "This Was Our Downfall".
Curiosidades acerca da banda !
Quando o Kabuki cumpriu seu ciclo artistico, Mark pensou em outro nome, de modo que cogitou Outgang, ou seja, a ideia de fora da lei ou gangue marginal, na época o baterista,namorava uma garota alemã, quando soube do nome disse que se assemelhava a Ausgang (saída), isso gerou uma idiossincrasia a banda que adotou de imediato, bem como fez Mark lembrar de seu livro favorito Última Saída para Brooklyn, de Hubert Selby Jr.
Certa vez, a banda tocou na Universidade de Coventry, junto ao Death Cult.Foi neste show que a banda conheceu o primeiro empresário, o John, que estava em contato com várias bandas da cena, Mark disse em uma entrevista que gostou de trabalhar com o Andy Sex Gang, além de ajudar a produzir o Ep Head on, ele deu algumas dicas de vocais.
No tocante a religião, tendo em vista a ironia contida em (Hot for christ ), Mark, disse que é um homem da ciência e confessa que religião e magia, são construções humanas que algumas pessoas usam pra dar sentido a um universo caótico e sem propósito.
Em 1985, lançaram o álbum completo, Manipulate. A faixa de abertura, “Fat Vigilante”, foi uma crítica ao sistema judiciário, envolta naquela ironia afiada que é marca registrada da banda.Por meio de um personagem o “Fat vigilante” isto é, um sujeito violento e racista.
Em 1987, lançaram o mini-LP Los Descamisados sob o nome Ausgang A-Go-Go, nesta época a banda estava sem gravadora, o mini-LP saiu pelo próprio selo, o Shakedown. Sem grana, com vendas baixas e um público cada vez menor nos shows, de modo que o Ausgang A-Go-Go acabou sendo uma despedida anunciada.
Uma informação interessante, acerca da vida pessoal de Mark, isso ele me disse pelo chat de conversa do Instagram que antes de ser músico, era pintor de arte expressionista abstrata e inclusive tinha um estúdio onde dedicava-se ao trabalho artístico.
Em relação ao termo (Gótico), Mark, disse que nos anos 80, muitas bandas se incomodavam como o termo, pois parecia algo inventado por algum jornalista preguiçoso, mas hodiernamente, acham até bacana, diante da polissemia da palavra e agradece aos milhares de fãs espalhados pelo mundo.
Mark é formado em Literatura inglesa, bem como gosta de brincar com as palavras com trocadilhos para ele uma letra nem precisa ter um sentido específico, pode ser só uma combinação de frases e sons que soam bem juntas, ademais usa a técnica de cut-up e de escrever no estilo fluxo de consciência.
Embora Mark ame o Velvet Underground, mas menção à “Venus In Furs” é mais ao livro de Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, que inspirou a música, do que à faixa em si. Ele elucidou essa dúvida aos fãs que achavam que havia alguma ligação da letra ao Velvet Underground.
Mark, também faz questão em manter a funcionalidade de seu corpo, por meio de exercícios do quais chama de ginástica rítmica, vale lembrar que treina desde os 14 anos, começou com o Kung Fu. Depois vieram outras artes marciais, wrestling, esgrima, yoga e, mais recentemente, um foco maior no movimento geral.
Mark, já manifestou a vontade de realizar um show no Brasil, portanto, (fica a dica)... enquanto isso a banda está trabalhando
em um novo álbum que deve sair em breve, e Mark segue escrevendo um
livro sobre a história da banda, além da forte presença nas redes
sociais, vale destacar que a banda atende com muito carinho e atenção os
fãs, o que os torna diferenciados.

Ausgang: sarcasm, shadows, and resistance beyond goth
Ausgang was formed in 1983 from the ashes of Kabuki, which itself emerged from Mark's first band, Solicitors. As Kabuki, they released the single I Am a Horse (1982) with Max (vocals), Cub (bass), Matthew (guitar), and Ibo (drums).
With an intense and chaotic sound, strongly influenced by The Stooges and The Birthday Party, the band found itself part of a scene that included names like Sex Gang Children, Alien Sex Fiend, Skeletal Family, Specimen, and Inca Babies.
At the end of 1983, they signed with the label Criminal Damage Records. Their first EP, The Teachings of Web, was released in 1984, followed by the single "Solid Glass Spine" and the EP Head On!, produced by Andi Sex Gang. With a raw and energetic sonic identity, the group quickly established itself in the growing British gothic scene.
The year 1985 brought lineup changes: Ian took over drums, and soon after, Stu replaced Cub on bass. With this new setup, Ausgang toured with Gene Loves Jezebel and decided to create their own label, Shakedown, through which they released the single "King Hell" in 1986. The following year, inspired by a friend who painted the phrase Ausgang-a-Go-Go on his jacket, the band adopted the name and released the mini-LP Los Descamisados.
Ausgang split up in 1987, with each member going their separate ways. Mark formed some new bands – most notably Lean Steel, which recorded a few demos and toured with The Wonderstuff, but also eventually broke up.
It was only in 2003 that Ausgang reformed after the release of "Last Exit", a best-of compilation by Cherry Red Records.
The band toured globally for a few years, took a break, reformed again, and stopped performing when bassist Stu fell ill.
In 2022, the band reformed once again, this time with a new drummer, Victor, and a new bassist, Sarah, and began touring again.
Batcave Productions in Poland released a vinyl album (and later a CD) of early demos from Kabuki and Ausgang titled "This Was Our Downfall".
Band Trivia!
When Kabuki had run its artistic course, Mark considered a new name and thought of Outgang, meaning something like outlaw or fringe gang. At the time, the drummer was dating a German girl, who mentioned that it sounded like Ausgang (exit in German). This created a sort of idiosyncrasy the band embraced immediately. It also reminded Mark of his favorite book, Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr.
Once, the band played at Coventry University alongside Death Cult. It was at that show that they met their first manager, John, who was connected to various bands in the scene. In an interview, Mark said he enjoyed working with Andy Sex Gang – beyond helping produce the EP Head On, he also gave some vocal tips.
Regarding religion, considering the irony in “Hot for Christ”, Mark said he's a man of science and believes religion and magic are human constructs some use to make sense of a chaotic, purposeless universe.
In 1985, they released their full-length album, Manipulate. The opening track, “Fat Vigilante”, was a critique of the justice system, wrapped in the sharp irony that is the band’s trademark – through a character, the “Fat Vigilante”, a violent and racist man.
In 1987, they released the mini-LP Los Descamisados under the name Ausgang A-Go-Go. At that time, the band was without a label, so the mini-LP was released through their own label, Shakedown. Broke, with low sales and declining show attendance, Ausgang A-Go-Go ended up being a kind of farewell.
An interesting detail about Mark’s personal life – he told me over Instagram chat that before becoming a musician, he was an abstract expressionist painter and even had a studio where he dedicated himself to his art.
Regarding the term "Gothic", Mark said that in the 1980s, many bands were annoyed by the term, as it seemed like something invented by a lazy journalist. But nowadays, they think it’s actually cool, given the word’s polysemy, and they appreciate the thousands of fans around the world.
Mark has a degree in English Literature and likes to play with words using puns. For him, lyrics don’t even need to have a specific meaning – they can just be a combination of sentences and sounds that go well together. He also uses the cut-up technique and writes in a stream-of-consciousness style.
Although Mark loves Velvet Underground, the reference to “Venus In Furs” is more about the book by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, which inspired the song, than the track itself. He clarified this to fans who thought the lyrics had some link to Velvet Underground.
Mark also emphasizes keeping his body functional through what he calls rhythmic gymnastics. He’s been training since he was 14, starting with Kung Fu. Later came other martial arts, wrestling, fencing, yoga, and more recently, a broader focus on general movement.
Mark has expressed the desire to perform in Brazil – so, heads up! In the meantime, the band is working on a new album to be released soon. Mark is also writing a book about the band’s history. The band maintains a strong presence on social media and is known for being very attentive and caring with fans, which sets them apart.
