The Mighty Lemon Drops

 

Formada na primavera de 1985 em Wolverhampton, coração industrial do Black Country inglês, a The Mighty Lemon Drops foi uma banda que caminhou entre o pós-punk melódico e a herança psicodélica dos anos 60, com guitarras Rickenbacker reverberando ecos de Byrds e Echo & the Bunnymen.

Antes de assumirem esse nome, o grupo era conhecido como The Sherbet Monsters, formado por Paul Marsh (voz), Dave Newton (guitarra) e Tony Linehan (baixo), todos com passagens anteriores pela obscura banda Active Restraint, ativa no circuito alternativo em 1982. Dave Newton chegou a integrar os primeiros dias da Wild Flowers, outro nome relevante da cena britânica da época. 

A sonoridade dos Drops misturava urgência pós-punk com uma pegada claramente influenciada por guitarras psicodélicas, o que os aproximava de contemporâneos como Echo & the Bunnymen, mas com uma abordagem mais direta e menos densa. Após a saída do baterista original Martin Gilks (que depois se juntaria ao The Wonder Stuff), a formação se consolidou com Keith Rowley na bateria.

O primeiro single, "Like an Angel", saiu em dezembro de 1985 pelo pequeno selo Dreamworld Records, gerenciado por Daniel Treacy do Television Personalities. A faixa rapidamente se tornou um hit do UK Indie Chart, vendendo cerca de 14 mil cópias um número expressivo para os padrões da cena independente. No mesmo período, gravaram uma importante sessão para John Peel, carimbando seu lugar na emergente cena C86, encampada pela revista NME. 

Chamando a atenção de Geoff Travis (Rough Trade), assinaram com o selo Blue Guitar, uma subdivisão da Chrysalis Records, e logo emplacaram um contrato com a Sire Records para distribuição nos EUA e Canadá. Em 1987, Derek Jarman, ícone do cinema experimental britânico, dirigiu o videoclipe do single "Out of Hand", seguido pelo sucesso "Inside Out", em 1988.

Os álbuns Happy Head (1986) e World Without End (1988) chegaram às paradas britânicas (posições #58 e #34, respectivamente), mas foi nos Estados Unidos que a banda conquistou maior êxito. O segundo álbum se tornou um dos mais tocados nas rádios universitárias e alternativas, figurando no topo do Modern Rock/College Chart. A crítica da revista Sounds elegeu Happy Head como um dos 50 melhores álbuns de 1986. 

O som da banda se apoiava fortemente nas guitarras de Newton, que usava uma rara Vox Mark VII "Teardrop" de 12 cordas e uma Micro-Frets Spacetone de 6 cordas,instrumentos que imprimiam uma identidade sonora única ao grupo.

Mesmo com o sucesso alternativo, a banda rompeu com a Chrysalis após três discos, Happy Head, World Without End e Laughter (1989). Este último ainda conseguiu entrar nas paradas da Billboard (posição #195), consolidando o nome da banda nos Estados Unidos. Durante as gravações de Laughter, Tony Linehan deixou o grupo, sendo substituído por Marcus Williams. 

Nos anos seguintes, lançaram ainda os álbuns Sound ... Goodbye to Your Standards (1991) e Ricochet (1992), antes de encerrarem as atividades. Compilações e discos ao vivo como All the Way, Young, Gifted & Black Country e a coletânea Rollercoaster mantiveram o nome da banda em circulação. Em 2000, a banda se reuniu para um show especial em Wolverhampton e, em 2007, surgiram rumores (nunca confirmados) de uma reunião no festival Coachella.

O guitarrista Dave Newton seguiu carreira como produtor e engenheiro de som na Califórnia, trabalhando com bandas como The Little Ones, The Blood Arm, The Soft Pack, entre outros. Em 2006, produziu e tocou na releitura de "Inside Out" para o álbum da banda The Lassie Foundation. Em 2011, produziu o terceiro álbum do The Blood Arm, Turn and Face Me. 

Atualmente, todos os álbuns do Mighty Lemon Drops foram relançados oficialmente pelo selo Wounded Bird Records, com faixas bônus e encartes especiais. Em 2014, a Cherry Red Records resgatou o material primordial da banda com a coletânea Uptight: The Early Recordings 1985–1986 um verdadeiro mergulho nos primeiros passos dessa pérola da cena alternativa britânica.

The Mighty Lemon Drops

Formed in the spring of 1985 in Wolverhampton, the industrial heart of England's Black Country, The Mighty Lemon Drops was a band that navigated between melodic post-punk and the psychedelic heritage of the 1960s, with Rickenbacker guitars echoing the sounds of The Byrds and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Before adopting this name, the group was known as The Sherbet Monsters, formed by Paul Marsh (vocals), Dave Newton (guitar), and Tony Linehan (bass), all of whom had previously been members of the obscure band Active Restraint, active in the alternative circuit in 1982. Dave Newton even spent some early days with The Wild Flowers, another significant name in the British scene of that time.

The Drops' sound blended post-punk urgency with a clear influence from psychedelic guitars, which brought them closer to contemporaries like Echo & the Bunnymen, but with a more direct and less dense approach. After the departure of original drummer Martin Gilks (who later joined The Wonder Stuff), the lineup solidified with Keith Rowley on drums.

Their first single, "Like an Angel," was released in December 1985 by the small Dreamworld Records label, managed by Daniel Treacy of Television Personalities. The track quickly became a hit on the UK Indie Chart, selling around 14,000 copies—a significant number for the standards of the independent scene. During the same period, they recorded an important session for John Peel, cementing their place in the emerging C86 scene championed by NME magazine.

Attracting the attention of Geoff Travis (Rough Trade), they signed with the Blue Guitar label, a subdivision of Chrysalis Records, and soon secured a contract with Sire Records for distribution in the USA and Canada. In 1987, Derek Jarman, an icon of British experimental cinema, directed the music video for the single "Out of Hand," followed by the success of "Inside Out" in 1988.

The albums Happy Head (1986) and World Without End (1988) reached the British charts (positions #58 and #34, respectively), but it was in the United States that the band achieved greater success. The second album became one of the most played on university and alternative radio stations, topping the Modern Rock/College Chart. Sounds magazine critics voted Happy Head as one of the 50 best albums of 1986.

The band's sound relied heavily on Newton's guitars, who used a rare 12-string Vox Mark VII "Teardrop" and a 6-string Micro-Frets Spacetone, instruments that imprinted a unique sonic identity on the group.

Despite their alternative success, the band broke with Chrysalis after three albums: Happy Head, World Without End, and Laughter (1989). The latter still managed to enter the Billboard charts (position #195), solidifying the band's name in the United States. During the recording of Laughter, Tony Linehan left the group and was replaced by Marcus Williams.

In the following years, they released the albums Sound ... Goodbye to Your Standards (1991) and Ricochet (1992) before disbanding. Compilations and live albums such as All the Way, Young, Gifted & Black Country and the Rollercoaster collection kept the band's name in circulation. In 2000, the band reunited for a special show in Wolverhampton, and in 2007, rumors (never confirmed) of a reunion at the Coachella festival emerged.

Guitarist Dave Newton pursued a career as a producer and sound engineer in California, working with bands such as The Little Ones, The Blood Arm, and The Soft Pack, among others. In 2006, he produced and played on a re-recording of "Inside Out" for The Lassie Foundation's album. In 2011, he produced The Blood Arm's third album, Turn and Face Me.

Currently, all of The Mighty Lemon Drops' albums have been officially re-released by the Wounded Bird Records label, with bonus tracks and special inserts. In 2014, Cherry Red Records rescued the band's primordial material with the compilation Uptight: The Early Recordings 1985–1986, a true dive into the early steps of this gem of the British alternative scene.
