Insulto Oculto – The Underground Post-Punk of ABC Paulista
At the end of 1989, Insulto Oculto emerged — a band whose name carried the tension and urgency of the underground scene. The group was formed by brothers Laércio “Rato” Gonçalves (guitar) and Sidney “Ratinho” Gonçalves (bass), both previously from the hardcore punk band Hino Mortal.
To complete the lineup, they were joined by Rogelio “Pião” Garcia (formerly of Van Gogh) on drums, José Ricardo “CB” dos Santos on vocals and guitar, and Francisco “Chico” Claudio Nicassio on keyboards and guitar (both formerly of Páginas Envenenadas).
In October 1990, Bizz magazine highlighted the strength of the punk movement and its protest-laden lyrics — a scene in which Insulto Oculto fit perfectly. The following year, the band released their first demo tape, featuring five tracks, marking the beginning of the recorded legacy of their short but intense journey.
By 1992, they released a single with three striking songs: Sobre o Abismo, Vadia, and Segmentos do Século. The impact of Insulto Oculto’s sound did not go unnoticed. In a feature on bands from the ABC region, Top Rock magazine pointed out clear influences from Sisters of Mercy, and in another edition, described the band's sound as a visceral blend of “depression, melancholy, madness, and despair.”
Throughout their existence, the group performed at iconic venues of São Paulo's alternative scene, such as Espaço Retrô, Madame Satã, and Zoster, as well as making appearances on stages across the ABC Paulista region. However, like many names in the underground scene, Insulto Oculto had a brief run, ending their activities in 1993.
Despite their short time on the road, the band left a lasting mark on the alternative scene, moving between punk and post-punk with lyrics full of critique and a dense sound that still resonates among underground music enthusiasts.
